How to see old Street View on Google Maps

Find earlier capture dates and compare how a street has changed.

Explore historical Street View

Google Maps Street View can show earlier photographs of the same street. The feature is often called Street View time travel or a Street View time machine. The available dates depend on the location.

DeclineMap brings together approved before-and-after comparisons from selected places worldwide. It does not contain an archive for every address or year.

On a computer

  1. Open Google Maps and find the street or place.
  2. Drag the yellow Pegman onto a blue Street View line, or open a Street View photograph.
  3. Choose See more dates when it is available.
  4. Select a dated thumbnail to open an earlier capture. Check its capture date and viewpoint.

Repeat with a later date to compare the same frontage or stretch of street.

On Android, iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Google Maps app and find a place.
  2. Open its Street View image, or drop a pin and choose the Street View thumbnail.
  3. Tap the image to show its controls, then choose See more dates if available.
  4. Select an earlier capture from the dated images.

Controls and date availability can differ between the app and a mobile browser. Try Google Maps on a computer if the date selector is missing.

Why are older dates missing?

Not every place has historical Street View imagery. Some streets have only one capture, and the available years may have large gaps. Moving to another point on the road can show a different set of dates.

Historical satellite and aerial imagery are separate from street-level photographs. An old aerial image does not imply a Street View capture exists for that year.

Compare like for like

Match the location, direction and camera position. Compare the capture dates, not the date you opened the map. Check that both views show the same building or road.

Weather, seasons, parked vehicles, camera hardware and image quality can change the appearance of a street. Use visible features such as occupancy, building condition and public infrastructure. A pair of images cannot establish why a place changed.

Add a before-and-after comparison

Copy the full Google Maps address-bar link or official embed for the earlier view. Repeat for the later view of the same place. In DeclineMap, choose Submit and complete Before, After and Confirm.

Include the capture years, location and a short factual description. Submissions are reviewed before appearing publicly. Google imagery remains in its official embeds.
